The pay ratios between CEOs and average employees are once again in the news. This is partly because proxy season always raises this issue and partly because there is a move in some circles to do away with the new pay ratio disclose rule that is part of Dodd-Frank. This year’s ratios will likely be bigger than last. The same will likely be true for most years in the foreseeable future. Here’s why.
The average annual increase for the average employee has been between 2.6% and 3.2% for several years. An article was published last week with data from Aon Hewitt and Towers Watson that showed the annual pay raise is essentially dead (and in Towers Watson’s case, bonus pools will also be underfunded). The data apparently shows that we will deliver base pay as a flat amount going forward. Increases in pay will come from incentive plans, if they are funded. Let’s cast a fond farewell to a method of pay that has existed for as long as people have been paid.
Once your company has decided on pay increases, the issue of communicating those raises to the employees becomes paramount. The natural expectation is that it should be easy, right?
